A Cotton Shirt (Cotton Clothes in the Japanese version) is the first Clothing-class armor available in both Golden Sun and Golden Sun: The Lost Age. In both games it is bought in the earliest towns the player's newly formed party can enter and explore; namely, the towns Vale and Vault in Golden Sun, and the town Daila in The Lost Age. Being a Clothing-class piece of body protection, a Cotton Shirt can be equipped on all Adepts in both games. It is also initially equipped on party members in both games, including Isaac and Garet in Golden Sun both in the prologue and in the start of the modern day, and Felix in The Lost Age. It increases the equipped Adept's base Defense rating by 3 points. Its buy value is 20 coins and its sell value is 15 coins.
In Golden Sun after the prologue sequences, the player begins in present-day Vale with a level-1 party of Isaac and Garet each equipped with a Cotton Shirt, and Cotton Shirts are the weakest body armor in the game. Obviously no one would buy Cotton Shirts to equip on party members because of this; the player will want to buy stronger defensive equipment for Isaac and Garet from the very start, because stronger Travel Vests are available from the very start of the game in the first town of Vale's armor vendor. Selling off both Cotton Shirts would net 30 coins back, which is enough to pay for an extra Leather Cap; a good deal at that early point in the game.
In Golden Sun: The Lost Age, the cotton shirt effectively plays the same lowest-of-the-low role, with Felix being the only one equipped with one this time. Right away the player should buy a Travel Vest for Felix.
