This article is about the character and boss. For the dungeon, see Tret Tree.Waelda, or fairy trees, found in Kolima Forest, and is featured as both a boss and an actual dungeon in Golden Sun.
In Golden Sun, he is a guardian of the forest, serving the role of a "father" to the forest, while his counterpart, Laurel is its "mother". Lady McCoy's yearning for a palace of her own drove her husband to commission Kolima's lumberjacks to bring down all the trees needed for it. Ultimately, one of the lumberjacks even took an axe to Tret himself, at about the same time Psynergy Stones rained down from Mt. Aleph's eruption. Tret was struck by such a stone while in a state of rage that Kolima, which until then had respected him, would try to cut him down. With the glamour (i.e. faerie magic) abilities that the stone gave him, Tret turned the entire population of Kolima into trees. Tret had still been cut so badly that he was slowly dying, and when he died, so would the entire forest bound to him. Thus, the cursed humans would die as well. When the party enters Tret's forest or the town of Kolima for the first time, they are attacked by Tret's glamour, which induces a cutscene.
Confrontation and revivalEdit
Isaac and his party eventually come before Tret and physically climb into his interior to battle an instance of Tret's deranged self, and they beat him back to his senses, so to speak. After the battle, Tret attempts to reverse his curse, his rage finally becalmed. However, he is too weak to effect the reversion. The party needs to save him by using some Water of Hermes on him from the fountain at Mercury Lighthouse.
To revive him, the party needs to get water from the lighthouse and backtrack to Tret in order to apply it (unless the player in question chose to clear Mercury Lighthouse before tackling the Tret subquest, in which case they do not have to backtrack). Once he is revived, the curse is undone, and more water can be taken and used on the party to recover all HP to one character.
In Golden Sun: Dark DawnEdit
Tret, alongside Laurel, appears in Golden Sun: Dark Dawn. He is still his friendly self after Isaac restored his sanity in the first game, though he appears to enjoy naps very often. He immediately recognizes Matthew as Isaac's son, Karis as Ivan's daughter, Tyrell as Garet's son and Rief as Mia's son. He also identifies Amiti to be a "descendant of Mia's", implying that Amiti's father may, in fact, be Alex. Matthew and the gang come to him for advice on getting through Belinsk castle, and for obtaining a feather from a Mountain Roc.
As a bossEditHP, 36 PP, 125 Attack, 27 Defense, 30 Agility, and 28 Luck. In terms of resistance, it has a Mercury Resistance rating of 175, a Jupiter Resistance rating of 100, a Venus Resistance rating of 72, and a Mars Resistance rating of 25, and in regards to its abilities it uses its available Venus-based attacks with a power rating of 105.
Tret uses these battle commands:
- Attack: Used 2 out of 8 times, this is this monster's standard physical attack.
- Sleep Star: Used 2 out of 8 times, this is a monster skill that resembles an array of yellow orbs floating from the user towards multiple Adepts, possibly inflicting Sleep on each one. Its range rating is 3.
- Thorn: Used 2 out of 8 times, this is a Psynergy spell that stabs the party with large spiky vines, dealing a Venus-based attack with a power rating of 35 and a range of 3. It consumes 6 of the user’s PP.
- Growth: Used 1 out of 8 times, this is a Psynergy spell that causes a few thorny vines erupt from the ground and through a single Adept, dealing a Venus-based attack with a power rating of 25. This ability consumes 4 of its user's PP.
- Quake: Used 1 out of 8 times, this is a Psynergy spell that launches multiple Adepts into the air, dealing a Venus-based attack with a power rating of 12 and a range of 3. This ability consumes 4 of its user's PP.
Upon his defeat, Tret yields 226 EXP, 700 coins and a guaranteed Potion. If it is felled by the attack effect of an offensive Mars Djinni, his rewards increase to 290 EXP and 900 Coins. How difficult Tret is depends on when he is fought. While he is a moderately challenging boss, if the party battles him after completing Mercury Lighthouse first, he is much easier to defeat.
"This Waelda tribesman is one of the elders and guardians of Kolima Forest, along with Laurel.
Over time he has grown into a massive tree and has protected all of Kolima from numerous calamities."
The "adventure mode" demo of Golden Sun: Dark Dawn, showcased as a floor demo at E3 2010, has as one of its objectives a poster of a cartoon image of Tret's angry face that Matthew is to burn using Fireball as a utility Psynergy. Adding to the comic effect is that when the poster is burned away, a second poster showing Tret with a happier face remains.
